His Excellency Abdullah Abdul Ali Al Humaidan, Secretary General of Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination, stressed that the organization supports the training of people of determination in self-advocacy skills so that they express themselves, know their rights, and be able to participate in making important decisions in their lives.
“Educating people of determination about their rights and duties is not a luxury sought by people of determination, but it is a basic right for them within their society in various aspects of life, and it is confirmed by international agreements that guarantee them all rights. ZHO has been striving for years side by side with many institutions working in the field of care and rehabilitation of people of determination to achieve integration on the ground in education, health and work, and to consolidate the principle of equality”, he added. His Excellency praised all the participants who showed great commitment and interaction to achieve the goals of the program since its inception.
His Excellency Abdullah Al Humaidan said that the self-advocacy program for people of determination will benefit all participants in applying skills to enhance self-confidence and learn decision-making in general, stressing that highlighting the voice of people of determination and enabling them to express themselves and their needs and defend their rights in a systematic manner reflects the position that the UAE has reached in this field.
It is worth noting that the term self-advocacy refers to the civil rights movement for people with developmental disabilities, also known as cognitive or intellectual disabilities, and other disabilities. It is also an expression of particular importance in the movement for the rights of people of determination, and the self-advocacy movement seeks to reduce the isolation of people of determination, and to provide tools and experiences that enable them to get a firm grip on their own lives.
